Creative Dying for Fabric Arts
Watch colors creatively added to silk blend, bleed and make unexpected explosions and designs. Create your own design on your own colorful silk scarf. Instructor Peggy Lyon.  Ages 5 through 12, 10:00-10:50 a.m. Ages 13 to adult, 11 -11:50 p.m.

 

Watercolor and Crayon Resist
Who doesn’t love to watch magic appear when watercolor is painted on top of crayon? We will draw and design with crayon, add watercolor and watch the painting appear.   Instructor Peggy Lyon. Ages 5 through 12, 1:00-1:50 p.m.   

 

Plein Air Painting
Artist Peggy Lyon helps channel your inner prairie flower. Oil painting in the beautiful Flint Hills at Camp Wood YMCA. Ages 13 through Adult, 3:00-4:50 p.m. (two hour class)


Prairie Fun

Horseback Rides
Here we go off across the plains! Our wranglers will lead rides that give you a unique prairie perspective. Additional fee of $10.00. Age 8 through Adult, 10:00-10:50 a.m., 11:00-11:50 a.m., 1:00-1:50 p.m., 2:00-2:50 p.m. and 3:00-3:50 p.m. Age 2 thru 7, 4:00-4:50 p.m. Long pants and closed-toed shoes required.  Giddy up, whoa!

 

Flint Hills Cowboys
Come shoot the bull with Flint Hills Cowboy author and folklorist, Dr. Jim Hoy. Learn what it takes to be a cowboy and try your hand at a lasso. Ages 11 through Adult, 1:00-1:50 p.m. and 3:00-3:50 p.m.

 

Guided Prairie Walk
Explore the adventures of the prairie on a guided walk with Dr. Randy Kidd, who will enlighten us about the complex and delicate Flint Hills prairie ecosystem. Age 8 through Adult, 1:00-1:50 p.m.


Mime 101
This is a demonstration and audience participation workshop that teaches the basics of mime for any age level. Participants will have fun while learning skills to apply to any mime performance whether that performance is on a stage or in the family kitchen.


The Magic of Water
Explore the wet world of wriggling insects and schooling fish with National Park Ranger, Kristen Hase. Age 6 through Adult, 1:00-1:50 p.m and 3:00-3:50 p.m.

 

Prairie as Habitat
Habitat is where they’re at (plants and animals that is)!  Learn about the natural homes of prairie plans and animals with Nature Conservancy Landscape Program Manager Brian Obermeyer. Ages 10 through Adult. 1:00-1:50 p.m.

 

Flint and Fire
Firestarters ignite! Learn the importance of fire in maintaining and rejuvenating the prairie with Nature Conservancy Landscape Program Manager Brian Obermeyer. Try your hand at starting a fire from flint and steel and take a close look at arrowheads and tools created from the land. Ages 11 through Adult. 2:00-2:50 p.m.

 

Folklore of the Flint Hills
As a folklorist and a native plainsman, Dr. Jim Hoy is committed to documenting and celebrating the lives of those fortunate to live in the Flint Hills. Enjoy the tales of local culture. Age 11 through Adult, 4:00-4:50 p.m.

 

Hands-On Reptiles & Amphibians
Get to know live specimens of each family through hands-on experiences, and see why reptiles and amphibians are so interesting! Instructor Angela Anderson. Ages 2 through 6, 10:00-10:50 a.m., 11:00-11:50 a.m., 2:00-2:50 p.m. and 3:00-3:50 p.m.

 

Children’s Prairie Adventure
With Sue Kidd, Prairie Enthusiast. Walk in the grass, smell the flowers, find a bug! Ages 2 through 7, 11:00-11:50 a.m.

 

Edible and Medicinal Plants
Learn the healing properties of wildflowers and grasses in the Kansas Flint Hills with Randy Kidd. Ages 11 through Adult, 11:00-11:50 a.m.

 

Rest time
Rejuvenate yourself after enjoying the great outdoors. Ages 2 and up. 1:00-1:50 p.m. and 3:00-3:50 p.m.

 

Relax, Music, & Storytime. 
Re-group and re-charge before dinner and the evening concert with Laura Vollen. Ages 2 through 7, 4:00-4:50 p.m.

 

Children’s Scavenger Hunt
With Sue Kidd. What could be more exciting than scrounging the prairie with a grown-up Kidd! Age 6 through Adult, 2:00-2:50 p.m.
