10:00-11:50: Guided Prairie Walk with Dr. Tom Eddy, ESU Biologist and Herbarium Director. Ages 10 thru Adult. On this 90 minute hike through the Flint Hills, experience the prairie like never before. Knowledgeable prairie enthusiasts teach you about this complex and delicate ecosystem. Shorter version at 1:00.
11:00: Children’s Prairie Adventure with Sue Kidd, Mother Earth in disguise! Ages 5 thru 8. This interactive session will allow children to play in the prairie engaging in age appropriate lesson on habitats, wildlife, flora and fauna.
2:00: Prairie Scavenger Hunt with Sue Kidd. Ages 8-12. Children will search the prairie for a list of cool stuff!
1:00: The Prairie as Habitat with Brian Obermeyer, Landscape Program Manager for The Nature Conversancy. Ages 10 and up. Learn about the natural conditions and environment in which a plant or animal lives.
2:00: Flint and Fire with Brian Obermeyer. Ages 10 and up. Learn the importance of fire in maintaining and rejuvenating the prairie. Try your hand at starting a fire from flint and steel and take a close look at arrowheads and tools created from the land.
2:00 and 4:00: The Magic of Water with Kristen Hase, National Park Service Natural Resource Program Manager. Ages 5 and up, younger with adult supervision. This hands-on class wades into the creek to explore the wet world of wriggling insects and schooling fish. Bring your mud shoes and see how these animals survive on the prairie.
Cowboys and Horses
On the Hour beginning at 10:00 AM.: Horseback Rides—The prairie looks different while on horseback. Our wranglers will lead rides for those 7 years of age and older. Long pants, closed toed shoes and pre-registration required. Additional $10 fee applies.
1:00 and 3:00: Flint Hills Cowboys: Up Close and in Person. All ages. Come meet and talk with Jeff Davidson, winner of the 2013 Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest, songwriter, soloist and musician — he loves the cowboy way of life. Learn about the day-to-day work and try your hand at a lasso!
4:00: Folklore of the Flint Hills. Ages 10 and up. This insightful session is filled with tales of local culture by Jeff Davidson, winner of the 2013 Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest, songwriter, soloist and musician — he loves the cowboy way of life.
11:00 and 3:00: Edible and Medicinal Prairie Plants with Dr. Randy Kidd. Retired veterinarian who focuses on holistic plants from the prairie. Ages 10 and up. Gather plants of the prairie that are useful in both your medicine cabinet and your kitchen.
10:00: Salute the Sun–Yoga on the Prairie with Sami Aaron, Certified yoga instructor. Ages 5 and up. Welcome the morning sun with gentle yoga breathing and stretching practices. Accessible for all ages and levels of ability, no yoga props are required.
1:00: A Prairie Meditation with Sami Aaron. Ages 14 to Adult. Using yoga meditation tools, participants will connect with the prairie. Meditation techniques can alleviate stress and anxiety and are a healing tool for quieting the mind. Seated mediation – floor sitting or in chairs.
4:00: Rekindling Your Connection to the Natural World with Sami Aaron. Ages 14 to Adult. This deep guided meditation will help you tap into your connection to nature, and especially the healing landscape that draws us to the Flint Hills area. Seated meditation – floor sitting or in chairs.
10:00 and 1:00: Draw with glue, color with chalk, creating art using images of nature’s fall gifts, with local artist and High School art teacher Peggy Lyon. Children ages 5 and up.
11:00: Discover the art of contour drawing with Artist Peggy Lyon. Adult.
3:00 (2 hour + session): Plein Air, French expression meaning “the open air”. Become engulfed in a painting workshop with local artist and High School art teacher, Peggy Lyon, using the afternoon light painting the Flint Hills.
10:00 and 4:00: Pen in Hand: Writing in the Prairie with Dr. H. C. Palmer, former medical doctor, Vietnam War Battalion Surgeon and poet. Adult. Become inspired by others who have written about the grasslands and spend time putting into words what the prairie means to you through poetry and stories.
