11–11:50 AM: Banjo for American Folk Music. Come enjoy learning American folk tunes on the banjo covering the most common keys and time signatures! Bring your own banjo and some playing experience required. Limit of 20. Taught by Richard Crowson.

1–1:50 PM: Bluegrass Band. With its origins in traditional music of Europe and Africa, old-time music represents perhaps the oldest form of North American traditional music other than Native American music. Appropriate instruments for this class include fiddle, banjo (5 or 4 string), guitar (6 string or tenor), mandolin, mandola, bass fiddle, cello, viola, hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, jug, harmonica, Jew’s harp, accordion and concertina. Bring your own instrument and participants should be able to tune and play simple tunes up to speed on their instrument. No class limit. Taught by Ken White.

3–3:50 PM: Bluegrass Ornamentation and Style. Participants will work on technique and styles important to playing bluegrass music. Appropriate instruments for this class include fiddle, banjo (5 or 4 string), guitar (6 string or tenor), mandolin, mandola, bass fiddle, cello, viola, hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, jug, harmonica, Jew’s harp, accordion and concertina. 10–11:50 AM: The American Fiddle. Advanced level. For violin, viola, cello and double bass. World-renowned fiddler Darol Anger offers two classes in fiddle styles, beginning and advanced. The class will include demonstration and instruction in a variety of American idioms and tunes. Some playing experience required. No class limit. Taught by Darol Anger.

1–1:50 PM: The American Fiddle. Beginning level. For violin, viola, cello and double bass. World-renowned fiddler Darol Anger offers two classes in fiddle styles, beginning and advanced. The class will include demonstration and instruction in a variety of American idioms and tunes. Some playing experience required. No class limit. Taught by Darol Anger.

2–2:50 PM: Folk Music on the Ol’ Prairie. Ages 6 through adult. Come learn about traditional folk music played and sung for centuries by those who have inhabited the Flint Hills. Learn through discussion and demonstration songs and types of folk music that would have historically been performed in the Flint Hills. Limit of 20. Taught by Richard Crowson.

 

Singing

2–2:50 PM: Joyful Noise Choir. The Flint Hills are alive with the sounds of the Joyful Noise choir! No previous experience is required. No class limit. Taught by Penny Speedie and assisted by Justin Petersen.

3–3:50 PM: Musical Theatre. Come explore your acting and musical abilities in the natural surroundings of the Flint Hills! Learn and act out a hit song from a popular musical. No previous experience is required. No class limit. Taught by Penny Speedie and assisted by Justin Petersen.

4–4:50 PM: Opera. Come experience the drama and beauty of singing opera! Participants will produce and perform a short opera scene. No previous experience is required. No class limit. Taught by Penny Speedie and assisted by Justin Petersen.

 

Children

Kindermusik is a trusted music and movement program for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and young children.  Kindermusik is about kids, parents and teachers—coming together and having a great time! Give your child a lifelong love of music and a foundation for learning. Caregiver may accompany their child. If more convenient, the caregiver may register as many children as they wish that are between ages 2–7 for this class period. Limit of 10. Taught by Sara Coltrane.

Orff activities will include playing instruments, moving, singing and speaking. Come learn new ways to incorporate fun instrument sounds into great American folk songs, singing games and poems. Limit of 15. Taught by Gaile Stephens.

2–2:50 PM: Instrument Show and Petting Zoo. Ages 2–7. Ever wonder what it would be like to hold a trumpet or what a cello looks like up close? This is your chance!  Come learn about all types of string, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. A brief demonstration of the instruments will be followed with an instrument petting zoo that will offer a chance for kids to get up close and personal with all the instruments! Limit of 50. Taught by Gaile Stephens.

3–3:50 PM: Rest Time. Ages 2 to adult. Have a child that is used to having a nap? Come relax and enjoy calming music appropriate for all ages. Children ages 2–7 must be accompanied by an adult. No class limit. Taught by Sara Coltrane.

4–4:50 PM: Relax: Music and Story Time. Ages 2–7. Come listen to a story and/or dance to music. Must be accompanied by an adult. No class limit. Taught by Gaile Stephens.

 

Improvisation

2–2:50 PM: Beginning Jazz Improvisation. Ages 12 through adult. Come develop basic jazz improvisation skills by learning the blues. Some playing experience is required; however, no improvisation experience is required. Limit of 20. Taught by Gary Ziek.

10–11:50 AM: Creative Free Play: The Prairie in your Sound. Advanced level.  Using the basic elements of music and simple scales, Eugene Friesen will introduce improvisation for all instruments and will coach free musical play in small groups. Some playing experience is required; however, no improvisation experience is required. Limit of 30. Taught by Eugene Friesen.

1–1:50 PM: Creative Free Play: The Prairie in your Sound. Beginning level. Using the basic elements of music and simple scales, Eugene Friesen will introduce improvisation for all instruments and will coach free musical play in small groups. Miscellaneous

11–11:50 AM: Introduction to Handbells. Ages 7 through adult. Handbells are a musical instrument that is typically played in a group known as a handbell choir.  The act and art of ringing handbells may seem like a daunting task to those not familiar with how it is done, but beginners with the ability to read music can successfully learn to ring with a bit of practice and instruction. Handbell choirs are popular in churches, schools and as community ensembles and are a great way to involve all ages in a musical activity. Limit of 30. Taught by Kipp Willnauer.

11–11:50 AM: What is Music? A Listeners Guide. Ages 6 through adult. Through listening to music and active discussion, learn about harmony, melody, rhythm and what music is. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a CD recording of their favorite song. Limit of 20. Taught by Gary Ziek.

2–2:50 PM: Rappin’ in the Flint Hills. Ages 8 through adult. Jive with other camp participants and create a rap to remember in the Flint Hills! Limit of 20. Taught by Cade Amend.

3–3:50 PM: Beginning Conducting. Ages 8 through adult. Come enjoy learning the basics of conducting! No previous experience is required. Limit of 20. Taught by Tracy Freeze.

3–3:50 PM: Jammin’ with Your Friends. Ages 8 through adult. Come enjoy learning how to play and/or sing songs as duos, trios and quartets. So me playing/singing experience required. Limit of 20. Taught by John Harrison and Susan Mayo.

3–3:50 PM: Learning to Write Music. Ages 8 through adult. Come enjoy learning the basics of composing music! No previous experience is required. Limit of 20. Taught by Gary Ziek.

3–3:50 PM: Roots of Music. Ages 8 through adult. Come learn where music started and how it came to be the music we hear today! Limit of 20. Taught by Allan Comstock.

3–4:50 PM: Family Music Jam. For all ages and instruments (including voice). Come one, come all and enjoy learning to play and/or sing a variety of folk songs in a group setting.
