Strings

Beginning Strings.  Ages 6 through adult. Come enjoy learning the basics of playing either the violin, viola, cello, or double bass!  No previous experience is required.

Intermediate Strings Technique.  For violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  2–4 yrs playing experience required.

Advanced Strings Technique.  For violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  5+ yrs playing experience required.

String Ensemble.  For violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  String Ensemble contains the unique opportunity for experienced string players to collaborate in a comfortable and energetic setting.

Woodwinds

Beginning Flute.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of playing the flute!  No previous experience is required.

Beginning Oboe & Bassoon.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of playing the oboe or bassoon!  No previous experience is required.

Beginning Clarinet & Saxophone.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of playing the clarinet or saxophone!  No previous experience is required.

Intermediate Woodwind Technique.  For all woodwind instruments.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  2–3 yrs playing experience required.

Advanced Woodwind Technique.  For all woodwind instruments.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  4+ yrs playing experience required.

Woodwind Ensemble.  For all woodwind instruments.  Woodwind Ensemble contains the unique opportunity for experienced woodwind players to collaborate in a comfortable and energetic setting.

Brass

Beginning Brass.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of playing either the French horn, trumpet, trombone, or tuba!  No previous experience is required.

Brass Technique.  For all brass instruments.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  Some playing experience required.

Brass Choir.  For all brass instruments.  Brass Choir contains the unique opportunity for experienced brass players to collaborate in a comfortable and energetic setting.

Percussion

Percussion Session 1: Orchestral Percussion.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning basic drum technique on snare drum, bass drum, timpani, cymbals, suspended cymbal, woodblock, cowbell, and temple blocks!  No previous experience is required.

Percussion Session 2: Hand Drumming.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come enjoy learning basic hand drumming technique on congas, bongos, djembe, doumbek, claves, agogo bells, shaker, shekere, and guiro!  No previous experience is required.

Percussion Session 3: Percussion Ensemble.  Ages 6 through adult.  For all percussion instruments.  Percussion Ensemble contains the unique opportunity for percussion players to collaborate in a comfortable and energetic setting.  No previous experience is required.

Percussion Session 4: Mallet Percussion.  Ages 11 through adult.  Come enjoy learning basic mallet technique on marimba and vibraphone!  No previous experience is required.

Guitar/Folk Music

Beginning Guitar.  Ages 6–10 yrs.  Come enjoy learning the basics of playing the guitar!  No previous experience is required.

Intermediate Guitar Technique.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  1–2 yrs playing experience required.

Advanced Guitar Technique.  Further refine and develop your playing skills!  3+ yrs playing experience required.

Mandolin for American Folk Music.  Come enjoy learning American folk tunes on the mandolin covering the most common keys and time signatures!  Bring your own mandolin and some playing experience required. 

Banjo for American Folk Music.  Come enjoy learning American folk tunes on the banjo covering the most common keys and time signatures!  Bring your own banjo and some playing experience required.

Old-time Bluegrass Band.  With its origins in traditional music of Europe and Africa, old-time music represents perhaps the oldest form of North American traditional music other than Native American music. Appropriate instruments for this class include fiddle, banjo (5 or 4 string), guitar (6 string or tenor), mandolin, mandola, bass fiddle, cello, viola, hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, jug, harmonica, Jew’s harp, accordion, and concertina.  Bring your own instrument and participants should be able to tune and play simple tunes up to speed on their instrument.

Bluegrass Ornamentation and Style.  Participants will work on technique and styles important to playing bluegrass music.  Appropriate instruments for this class include fiddle, banjo (5 or 4 string), guitar (6 string or tenor), mandolin, mandola, bass fiddle, cello, viola, hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, jug, harmonica, Jew’s harp, accordion, and concertina.  Bring your own instrument and some playing experience required.

Prairie Fiddling.  For violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  This fiddle string ensemble will provide participants with the opportunity to play traditional American folk music tunes in a comfortable and energetic setting.  Some playing experience required.

Folk Music on the Old Prairie.  Ages 6 through adult.  Come learn about traditional folk music played and sung for centuries by those who have inhabited the Flint Hills.  Learn through discussion and demonstration songs and types of folk music that would have historically been performed in the Flint Hills.

Singing

Introduction to Singing.  Ages 6–12 yrs.  Come enjoy learning the basics of singing!  No previous experience is required.

Vocal Technique.  Further refine and develop your vocal skills!  Some experience required.

Joyful Noise Choir.  The Flint Hills are alive with the sounds of the Joyful Noise choir!  No previous experience is required.

Musical Theatre.  Come explore your acting and musical abilities in the natural surroundings of the Flint Hills!  Learn and act out a hit song from a popular musical.  No previous experience is required.

Opera.  Come experience the drama and beauty of singing opera!  Participants will produce and perform a short opera scene.  No previous experience is required.

Children/Kindermusik

Kindermusik.  Play and grow.  Kindermusik is a trusted music and movement program for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and young children.  Kindermusik is about kids, parents, and teachers—coming together and having a great time!  Give your child a lifelong love of music and a foundation for learning.  For ages 7 and younger.  Caregiver required to be present.

Instrument Building.  Come enjoy building and playing instruments made from household items!  For all ages.

Improvisation

Beginning Jazz Improvisation.  Ages 12 through adult.  Come develop basic jazz improvisation skills by learning the blues.  Some playing experience is required; however, no improvisation experience is required.

Creative Free Play: The Prairie in your Sound.  Advanced level.  Using the basic elements of music and simple scales, Eugene Friesen will introduce improvisation for all instruments and will coach free musical play in small groups.  Some playing experience is required; however, no improvisation experience is required.

Miscellaneous

What is music?  A Listeners Guide.  Ages 6 through adult.  Through listening to music and active discussion, learn about harmony, melody, rhythm, and what music is.  Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a CD recording of their favorite song.

Beginning Conducting.  Ages 8 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of conducting!  No previous experience is required.

Jamming with Your Friends.  Ages 8 through adult.  Come enjoy learning how to play and/or sing songs as duos, trios, and quartets.  Some playing/singing experience required.  

 Jazz Fundamentals.  Ages 8 through adult.  What is jazz, and how do you play jazz music?  Learn everything you need to know to understand and be ready to play/sing jazz music.  Bring your instrument (including voice) as some playing/singing may occur.  No previous experience is required.

Learning to Write Music.  Ages 8 through adult.  Come enjoy learning the basics of composing music!  No previous experience is required.

Rapping in the Flint Hills.  Ages 8 through adult.  Jive with other camp participants and create a rap to remember in the Flint Hills!

Roots of Music.  Ages 8 through adult.  Come learn where music started and how it came to be the music we hear today!

Family Music Jam.  For all ages and instruments (including voice).  Come one, come all and enjoy learning to play and/or sing a variety of folk songs in a group setting.  Participants may come and go as they please.  No previous experience is required.
